Levels and Scope of Practice
The Alberta College of Paramedics recognizes and registers
three levels of practice in Alberta, each with their own scope, as
established in the Alberta Occupational Competency Profiles
(AOCP):
- Emergency Medical Responder
(EMR)
- Emergency Medical Technician
(EMT)
- Emergency Medical Technologist-Paramedic
(EMT-P)
In order to move through the levels of practice,
practitioners must complete an education program
approved by the College, pass the Provincial Registration
Examination and register with the College.
Registration is renewed annually between October 1 and December
31.
In order to renew, practitioners must demonstrate
that they have maintained competencies through continuous
self-assessment and training. The Alberta Occupational Competency
Profile (AOCP) defines the scope of practice for practitioners at
all levels of practice in Alberta. The AOCPs also provide the basis
for the College's Continuing Competence Program, ranking each scope
as manadatory, recommended or variable. These documents offer
a complete description of the knowledge, skills, attitudes and
judgments expected of practitioners ranging from entry to practice
to mastery.

AOCP documents at each level of practice.
