The Alberta College of Paramedics operates the College’s Provincial Registration Examinations (College’s exams) to assess graduates of approved educational programs and candidates deemed substantially equivalent who seek registration as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP).

Candidates are evaluated based on their application of knowledge, skills and judgment. Testing includes both written (multiple choice) and practical components.

All Provincial Registration Examinations are based on the National Occupational Competency Profiles (EMR, ACP, PCP).

  • This component takes place at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Centre Sherwood Park (2100 Premier Way, Sherwood Park, Alberta). Location subject to change—you will receive a confirmation email.
  • Registration desks will be set up outside the exam rooms in alphabetical order by the candidate’s last name. There may be multiple rooms, please check for signage that will direct you to the correct registration desk.
  • The registration desks will open 90 minutes before the exam start time.
  • You will be called into the exam room 15 to 20 minutes prior to your start time.
  • A brief presentation prior to the exam will outline process and rules.
  • Supervisors for the exam will be in the room at all times.
  • ALL written exams contain 200 multiple choice questions. You have 3.5 hours to write the exam.
  • You will need to bring:
    • Government-issued picture ID (driver’s licence or passport) OR two of the following SIN card, AHCIP card, birth certificate or school identification.
    • Two HB pencils and a white eraser with no wrapper or paper cover.
  • You can leave the exam once you have finished and do not have to wait for the allotted time.
  • Results will be available on your profile through the Member Portal under the Exam tab within four weeks of exam day.
  • Make sure you have read the details on candidate conduct and the dress code.
  • The practical component takes place at the King’s University College (9125 – 50 Street, Edmonton, Alberta). Use the North Academic Building West Entrance. Location subject to change—you will receive a confirmation email.
  • You must sign in at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled start time. Candidates who arrive later than this may not be admitted.
  • Once you have signed in, you will be sequestered. The College attempts to sequester candidates for as short a times as possible; however, you should expect to be in the testing facility for 3 to 5 hours.
  • You will need to bring
    • Government-issued picture ID (driver’s licence or passport) OR two of the following SIN card, AHCIP card, birth certificate or school identification.
  • The EMR exam consists of one assessment (medical or trauma), randomly selected CPR skill station, spinal motion restriction skill station and one randomly selected skill station from the skill station list provided.
  • PCP and ACP practical exams consist of two scenarios (one medical AND one trauma).
  • Once you have completed your exam, you will be escorted to final sequester until you are released. Once released, you must leave the facility and cannot return.
