NEW Standard of Practice: Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct Involving a Patient – MEMBER CONSULTATION

As a regulated member of the Alberta College of Paramedics, you are invited to review and provide feedback on the College’s new Standard: Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct Involving a Patient.

About the Standard
As part of our obligations under Bill 21, the College is required to develop a new Standard of Practice addressing sexual misconduct and sexual abuse involving a patient.

Under the legislation, our standard of practice must set out:

  1. Who is considered a patient for the purposes of our regulated members
  2. When a sexual relationship may occur between a regulated member and a former patient
  3. When a person who is a spouse of, or in an interdependent relationship with a regulated member may also be a patient

This new Standard of Practice was compiled using information from Bill 21 and the requirements specified by government and an environmental scan of other regulators’ Standards of Practice, in consultation with legal counsel, staff and Council. This Standard is much more descriptive than our current Standards, which is the direction we’ve been given to follow.

While the legislation largely mandates the content of the Standard, your feedback will help us ensure it provides clear direction regarding the very serious issues of sexual misconduct and sexual abuse involving a patient.

I know this is our first member consultation of a new Standard under the HPA, and the timing is certainly not ideal, especially given the time of year.

We were given less than six weeks to develop this Standard and complete all required consultations before submitting it to government for distribution among the other colleges and for final approval.

I appreciate any and all feedback you’re able to provide. The deadline to provide feedback is January 1, 2019.
