Statement to Former Registration Committee

Statement to Former Registration Committee

As many of you know, the College and its former Registration Committee, consisting of (among others) Dana Terry, William McGregor, Eric Vallee, Jeff Wilbur, Jack Cook, Mark Gerla, Claude Comeau and Arthur Eggins (the “Former Registration Committee”), have had ongoing legal issues relating to the  prior termination of their positions with the College’s Registration Committee on January 22, 2016.  I am happy to announce that we have recently come to reach a settlement with the former committee.  The College recognizes that the Former Registration Committee was at all times acting in the best interests of the College, the membership and the public, and that its conduct of registration reviews were in accordance with the policies and directions of the College in force at the time.

We are pleased to announce that the legal issues between the College and the members of the Former Registration Committee have been resolved and that the Former Registration Committee members have been formally reinstated to the Registration Committee.  They have since voluntarily resigned from the Registration Committee.

We have gained valuable insight from this experience, made significant changes, and our current leadership is committed to fair and transparent dealings with all members, committees and stakeholders going forward.  Our thanks to the Former Registration Committee members for their efforts to address this situation.

I would also like to take this opportunity to share a letter that has been sent to the members of the former Registration Committee:

As President and on behalf of the current Council and College, for every impact the decisions of the former leadership (both Council and College), have had on your reputations, please accept our sincere apology.

While this apology comes much later than it should and we will likely never be able to completely convey the College’s appreciation.  Council does want the Former Registration Committee to know that we acknowledge your continued dedication to acting ethically and in the best interests of the public.  We find your resolve to restoring your reputation admirable, and are pleased to offer this apology.

The event giving rise to the conflict between the College and the Registration Committee was very challenging and required the balancing of many interests, including those of the public, the profession, and the membership, both specific and in general.  The Council acknowledges that its communications to the Registration Committee about its attempts to address these issues were inadequate, and that the Council’s motivation and efforts to deal with the results of the application of the College’s policy were not well‑communicated to the Registration Committee, the membership, and the public, resulting in unfair criticism of the Registration Committee.

We have gained valuable insight from this experience and have made significant changes as a result of this event.  Our current leadership is committed to fair and transparent dealings with all members, committees and stakeholders going forward.

Thank you for your efforts to ensure this situation will not happen again to anyone.

Sincerely

Pete Helfrich
